Khagrachhari district town wore a deserted look on Wednesday following the imposition of an overnight curfew amid clashes between the indigenous and Bangali settler communities on Tuesday that left one person dead.

Residents did not come out of houses and shops and other establishments remained closed in the morning despite the end of the curfew.

Pilkhana Trial Adjourned Till Apr 15

Eighty-four accused in BDR Pilkhana mutiny case were produced before the special court on Wednesday, the second day of the trial that began at Durbar Hall of the force's headquarters on Tuesday.

The court ordered giving copies of the charges to the accused before adjourning the proceedings till Apr 15 at around 11:45am after one-hour hearing.

Iraq Executes Saddam Henchman 'Chemical Ali'

Iraq on Monday executed Ali Hassan al-Majeed, the Saddam Hussein henchman widely known as "Chemical Ali", for crimes against humanity, government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said. "The death sentence against Ali Hassan al-Majeed has been carried out," Dabbagh said.

Majeed, a cousin of Saddam's who earned his nickname because of his use of poison gas, was executed by hanging, the government said in a statement.

World Food Day being observed

Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation brought out a rally in the city to mark the World Food Day on Friday. This year's theme of the day is 'Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis'.

Agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury inaugurated the day's events through the rally followed by a procession that started from Khamar Bari, participated among others by agriculturists, scientists, officials and members of the public.
